Functional medicine is a personalized approach that asks why you’re experiencing symptoms and explores factors that may be contributing. It considers how nutrition, digestion, hormones, sleep, stress, and lifestyle interact—with appropriate testing to help guide recommendations.
-
Traditional medical care includes diagnosing and treating disease, preventive care, and symptom management. A functional approach emphasizes how nutrition, lifestyle, and different body systems may contribute to your concerns, with personalized guidance and ongoing support.
We review lab results alongside symptoms and trends, and may recommend additional gut or hormone testing when appropriate.
-
You’ve tried changing your diet, taking supplements, prescriptions, or following health advice—but you still don’t feel like yourself. This is for people ready to explore what may be contributing to their symptoms and move forward with a personalized plan, clear priorities, and ongoing support.

Your journey is unique, and progress takes time. Your commitment and consistency, combined with personalized guidance and ongoing support, help build a strong foundation for success. We’ll celebrate progress, work through challenges, and adjust your plan along the way. Our focus is meaningful, sustainable change—while results and timelines vary and cannot be guaranteed. Some people feel better in a few weeks, while others take months to fully rebalance systems.
-
Yes! We do not want the price of care to stop you from receiving it. We have flexible payment options for care. We ask that the fee for all labs is paid at the beginning.
-
It can feel expensive up front because it’s often not covered by insurance. But it’s an investment in getting well and prevention, not staying sick. Many people accept their gut issues, acne, skin issues, chronic fatigue, PCOS, or other symptoms as permanent diagnoses. They may not know that they can heal. Over time, many clients save money by reducing medications, ER visits, surgeries, and lost productivity.
-
Testing includes bloodwork, comprehensive stool testing, and hormone testing if needed. Each test is selected to answer specific questions—not everyone needs the same panels.
-
No. We do not work directly with insurance companies, and the testing we offer is self-pay. You’ll receive a clear breakdown of costs before moving forward.
-
It’s time-intensive, not built for 7-minute insurance visits. It takes deeper testing and longer appointments. That’s why it’s not common in insurance care.
That said, it is growing rapidly. Clinics like the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, Mayo Clinic’s integrative programs, and many MDs are now blending functional medicine with their practice.
Dr. Mark Hyman, MD, Dr. Aristo and Elroy Vojdani, MD, and Dr. David Perlmutter, MD are a few leaders in functional medicine.
-
Dr. Macie does not prescribe any medication. We work with your body to balance systems and support function. The goal is to promote long term health with disease prevention.
-
Most conventionally trained doctors are trained to diagnose and treat acute disease using drugs and procedures — and they’re amazing at that. But they aren’t trained in nutrition, root-cause physiology, gut health, or environmental exposures. They label disease and dysfunction but typically do not use natural methods to prevent it.
Medical schools rarely teach nutrition. Food is the foundation of our health and acts as information in the body. Functional medicine fills those gaps with deeper testing and a broader understanding of how our physiology interacts. It can be supportive to your regular primary care visits with your medical doctor.
What To Expect
Visit 1: Comprehensive Health History + Lab Order
We take 60 minutes to explore your life story — not just your symptoms. These help us see patterns and connections traditional visits often miss. We will order labs based on what suits your history and symptoms best.
Visit 2: Functional Lab Review
Once your results are in, we walk through everything together in detail. You’ll understand exactly what’s going on in your body and why. From there, we build a personalized protocol tailored to your labs, symptoms, and goals.
Visit 3 and Beyond:
Healing doesn’t happen all at once — it happens in layers. Your care is structured in phases so we support your body in the right order, rather than overwhelming it.
PHASES OF CARE:
Phase 1: Restore Foundations (Weeks 0-4)
Before we go after deeper issues, we make sure your body can handle it.
Support drainage and detoxification pathways (liver, gut, lymph)
Improve digestion and regular bowel movements
Support vitamin and mineral absorption
Support blood sugar, stress responses, and inflammation
Phase 2: Remove Root Causes (Weeks 4–12)
We address what’s actually driving symptoms. Some people may remain in this phase for longer depending on how many layers there are and how long they have been symptomatic.
Target hidden infections (gut pathogens, yeast, etc.)
Address toxic burden (mold, metals, environmental toxins when indicated)
Support and regulate the immune system
Continue gentle detoxification support
Phase 3: Rebuild + Optimize (Weeks 12+)
Now we shift to strengthening and preventing relapse of symptoms.
Repair the gut lining and microbiome
Optimize hormones and metabolic function
Fine-tune nutrition and lifestyle for long-term healing
Build resilience so your body can handle future stressors
Long-Term: Maintain + Wellness
After your Gut Healing Plan, we don’t leave you on your own. Transitioning into a monthly wellness or yearly maintenance plan allows for early course correction and ongoing support—so you can maintain your progress and continue feeling your best for years to come.
We track key lab markers over time to catch dysfunction and imbalances early that can lead to disease.
We build resilience for the future by tracking your yearly lab markers to be able to identify stress in the system to restore dysfunction in the body.
